Youth Boat Race 2026 Makes Waves

Posted on Fri, 3 Apr, 2026

On Friday 3 April 2026, Fulham Reach Boat Club proudly hosted the third annual Youth Boat Race — a standout moment in the youth outreach rowing calendar that brought nearly 100 young athletes to the iconic Thames Championship Course.

Eight mixed crews, representing fourteen London state schools, raced side-by-side over the opening stretch of the historic Boat Race course from Fulham FC to Fulham Reach. For many, it was their first experience of competitive rowing, and what a stage to do it on.

A Day to Remember on the Thames
The day began with safety briefings and time trials, with just eight seconds separating all crews, setting up an afternoon of incredibly close racing. Four side-by-side races followed, each one fiercely contested, with overlapping finishes and loud cheers from more than 100 supporters lining the Fulham Reach river back.

The atmosphere was electric. With the Lightweight and Veteran Boat Races also taking place, and Oxford and Cambridge crews training nearby ahead of the famous race the following day, the energy on the Tideway was unmistakable.

Also to enhance the environmental sustainability of the event FRBC was running three electric powered coaching and safety boats in their fleet of six to help run the event with support from Electric Outboard and Rowing Solutions. While on land the team from Kitround, a sports kit recycling organisation, where offering free and low cost kit as well as collecting sports kit for reuse and recycling.

More Than Just a Race
For many participants, simply getting on the water marked the culmination of months of hard work and dedication. New schools discovered the excitement of rowing for the first time, while returning crews pushed to improve on last year’s performances.

Medals, celebrations, and plenty of smiles rounded off a day that showcased not just competition, but confidence, teamwork, and personal growth.

Building Confidence Through Rowing
As our CEO Adam Freeman-Pask reflected, the Youth Boat Race is about far more than results — it’s about giving young people the opportunity to discover what they’re capable of.

That impact was clear throughout the day. Teachers spoke of growing independence and confidence in their students, while parents and participants alike shared their excitement and pride. One young rower summed it up perfectly: “It was so much fun — I just want to do more.”

Opening the Sport to All
Delivered in partnership with the Oxford and Cambridge Rowing Foundation was attended by six crews from Fulham Reach containing a mix of state schools and two visiting crews of mixed state schools from Active Row Newham and Barn Elms.

The Youth Boat Race continues to open the doors of rowing to a new generation, proving that the sport truly is for everyone. At Fulham Reach Boat Club, we’re incredibly proud to see so many young people take to the water, represent their schools, and discover a lifelong love of rowing.
